Hummingbird Feeder
Choosing a Hummingbird Feeder
When my grandfather bought his first
hummingbird feeder years ago, there were not many styles from
which to choose. No longer just a glass jar with a base,
the hummingbird feeder is available in many shapes,
sizes and designs. Humming bird feeders may be made of plastic,
metal, ceramic or glass. Even glass bird feeders have moved
beyond the strictly utilitarian styling of its early years with
the popularity of hummingbird feeders created by artists of
glass. Feeders created by glass blowers are not just a holder
of nectar for the energetic little hummingbird, but also works
of art.
Consider your ability and personal
willingness to keep the feeder clean when choosing a
hummingbird feeder. Hummingbird feeders are made in
various shapes and sizes. Some designs can be disassembled and
washed in a dishwasher. Other hummingbird feeders have parts
that cannot be easily cleaned. These feeders may
require hand cleaning with the use of a bottle brush. Most all
designs do their intended job of feeding the hummingbird, but
some "vacuum" designs cause a dripping problem which will
inevitably attract ants. If ants are a problem in your area,
you may want to choose another design.
Color is another consideration when choosing
a hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds are attracted to the
color red. This doesn't mean that your hummingbird
feeder must be totally red. Hummingbirds are very
inquisitive. A little bit of red on the feeder itself is
quite sufficient. Adding red food coloring to the nectar is not
necessary and may even be harmful to the hummingbird. A better
way to attract hummingbirds to your yard would be to place the
feeder near flowers that attract hummingbirds.
